Club Culture, Communities and Safer Spaces

On May 07, 2021, the German Bundestag decided that clubs and live entertainment venues with a cultural connection are no longer defined as places of entertainment, but as facilities for cultural purposes. This represents a milestone decision for the protection and further development of club culture and diversity throughout all of Germany. In many world class cities, the local electronic club culture has traditionally been a staple for queers and outcasts from society, finding a space where self-expression is encouraged and community is created. But what challenges does this community face? How can club culture in cities around the world be made more inclusive and safe? And how can one ensure that these safer spaces do not fall victim to the COVID-19 pandemic? This talk will discuss club culture, nightlife and the community it embodies - past,
present and future.
