Downtown Nairobi Organic Food Craze

Downtown Nairobi Organic Food Craze aims to open the conversation on organic farming as a sustainable agriculture measure in Kenya.

Agriculture is the backbone of the country, contributing over 30% of GDP and employing over 80% of the rural population. Agriculture is the main foreign exchange earner with tea, coffee and horticultural produce. However, sustainable agriculture and value addition are identified as key factors that need to improve. A rising population and unsustainable agricultural practices, including the over-use of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides, have increased food insecurity and insufficient nutrition. The largely unhealthy food has lead to a rise in Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD), like cancer, heart disease, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes and obesity. NCD is therefore now the number one killer in Kenya.
