A More Equal Democracy - Women's Representation in Politics

Gender equality is a human right and an integral element in the ambition to realize all the SDGs. Increased equality brings with it the promise of unleashing the full potential of all members of society. The Nordic countries have for decades worked together to strengthen the role of women in all areas of society and currently lead multiple global rankings of gender equality. Japan ranks 121st in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report. At the same time, gender equality is continuously being discussed and debated in Japan, and there is an appetite for change.

In this Nordic Talks Japan event, we will discuss women’s representation and participation in politics and society, and how depictions of stereotypes affect perceptions of leadership and representation in society, and in policy outcomes. We aim to bring food for thought on how each of us can take action to realize gender equality in political participation.
